CADILLAC REPORTS INCREASE IN 1992 CALENDAR YEAR SALES

DETROIT, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Led by strong sales of the newly designed Seville, Eldorado and Fleetwood, Cadillac Motor Car Division reported an increase in 1992 calendar year retail sales of 6.6 percent, signaling a greatly reduced dependence on fleet and daily rental deliveries. The steady increase in retail sales combined with continued fleet demand resulted in total unit sales of 214,176 compared to 213,288 in 1991.
Sales of Seville, which garnered honors as Motor Trend's "Car of the Year," Automobile Magazine's "Automobile of the Year" and one of Car and Driver's "Ten Best," closed out the year at 41,152 units, up more than 54 percent compared to 26,688 sales in 1991.
Sales of Eldorado were equally impressive, up more than 79 percent with 27,527 units sold compared to 15,304 units in 1991.
"We're extremely pleased with the performance of these models," said John O. Grettenberger, Cadillac general manager and General Motors (NYSE: GM) vice president. "The strong retail sales performance from the Seville and Eldorado was accomplished without any type of sales incentives throughout the year and with no deliveries through fleet channels."
"With the new Northstar system, we expect an even stronger performance from these two personal luxury cars in 1993," said Grettenberger.
Sales of the Cadillac Allante luxury two-seater were 2,314 compared to sales of 2,643 the prior year.
Sales of the Cadillac De Ville, America's best-selling luxury car, closed at 127,766, off slightly from 1991 sales of 146,636 vehicles.
Deliveries of the Cadillac Brougham were 15,417 units. The rear-wheel-drive Fleetwood which replaced the Brougham in the 1993 model year is off to strong model introduction.
"We're very encouraged with the initial three months of the model year," Grettenberger said. "As the economy continues to grow, we're confident that sales will continue in an upward path. Already, sales of the Eldorado, Seville and newly designed Fleetwood are outpacing sales of 1992 models at a strong clip."
