CADENCE DEBUTS PLATFORM FOR MOBILE INFO APPLIANCE DESIGN.

Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NYSE:CDN), San Jose, Calif., supplier of software and services for electronic design, has introduced a system integration platform and design services targeting the mobile information appliance market.

To compete in this consumer market, suppliers must meet a variety of challenges, including creating complex, differentiated products at an accelerated pace. Cadence(R) Design Services helps customers to meet these design challenges using the platform, which enables a rapid modular mix-and-match of functions to reduce time to market. The Cadence platform and corresponding design services reduce customer risk by providing product expertise in multiple technologies such as wireless, multimedia, computing, power conservation, and ergonomic design.

"The mobile information appliance market is fertile ground for new entrants, as well as for established consumer and industrial manufacturers," said Jim Douglas, vice president and general manager of the Cadence Embedded Systems Design Group. "New usage models are being created at a breakneck pace. Moreover, no one company dominates this rapidly changing territory, either through market share or architectural and IP ownership. We are eager to help customers capitalize on the huge opportunities in this dynamic market."

Information Appliance Market Opportunity

International Data Corporation estimates that the market for smart consumer handheld appliances will grow at a compound annual rate of about 29 percent, reaching $6 billion in the year 2002. This market includes typically small, mobile, and ergonomic devices that provide information, entertainment, and communications capabilities to consumers. In the same timeframe, the industrial handheld market will grow to about $4 billion. This market includes segments such as retail automation, delivery and inventory tracking, and medical monitoring. All of these devices require complex electronic design and system integration, delivered in the short timeframes characteristic of consumer electronics.

Design Platform Specifics

The Cadence integration platform is applicable to the broad mobile computing market. This includes handheld devices such as palmtops and handheld PCs, classic organizers, and vertical application devices (VAD), such as the handheld terminals used at rental car check-in stations. The platform enables VAD manufacturers to adopt lower-cost modern handheld technology. This, in turn, accelerates the proliferation of handheld information and monitoring capabilities to remote and mobile workers.

Specifically, the platform enables the fast integration and debug of the whole range of required system components: central and media processors; modems for multiple wired communication standards; short-range, cable-free, interdevice communications options; fixed memory options, with flash card extensibility; and an array of visual, audio and mechanical user interface functions. The specific components utilized in any given services engagement are selected to meet the customer's usage model and overall price/performance requirements.

The Cadence Embedded Systems Design Group has a dedicated team specializing in all phases of mobile information appliance design -- from system architecture to chip and board design, to mechanical design. In addition, this team leverages the expertise of the Cadence Worldwide Design Services Network for wireless and wired, multimedia, digital integrated circuit (IC), and analog/mixed-signal IC design.
