CADENCE, ERICSSON FORM ASIC TEST SOLUTION PARTNERSHIP

CADENCE, ERICSSON FORM ASIC TEST SOLUTION PARTNERSHIP
SAN JOSE, Calif., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Cadence Design Systems Inc.

(NYSE: CDN) and Ericsson Telecom AB announced today that the two companies have signed a technology partnership to jointly develop a comprehensive ASIC test
solution. The agreement extends the existing technology partnership the two companies have and focuses on the development of the technologies required to automate the process of designing and testing ASIC designs, including test synthesis, logic and fault simulation and automatic test pattern generation. By providing designers with the ability to address test issues early in the process, the number of design iterations can be reduced and higher quality results can be achieved.
As part of the agreement, engineers from Cadence and Ericsson will work together on actual ASIC designs within Ericsson's internal hardware design group in an effort to develop a complete integrated test solution. Cadence will provide a fully automated top-down design system dedicated to assisting designers produce complete, fully functional, fully testable ASIC designs. Ericsson will provide design expertise, real world design problems and testing resources. In addition, the partnership will leverage the test technology already in place within Ericsson that has been developed by that company's internal CAD group.
Development work will take place at Ericsson's Stockholm, Sweden, facility as well as Cadence's Lowell, Mass., and San Jose research and development locations. The three sites will be connected through high- speed network links and teleconferencing capabilities.
The solution will be built around Cadence's Composer(TM) front-end environment, a mixed-level, integrated top-down design system based on the company's Design Framework II(TM) architecture. Developers will work to extend the capabilities of Cadence's mixed-level logic simulation technology, the Synergy(TM) family of design synthesis tools and the Verifault-XL(R) fault simulator within the complete design solution. Through integration of test into the designer's environment, the design engineer can address test issues earlier in the cycle and derive higher quality results. The Cadence approach is to provide more "test-intelligent" design tools rather than simply more intelligent test tools. This approach ensures that the designer maintains full accuracy and functionality of the design and puts test capabilities in the hands of more people.
"Both Cadence and Ericsson agree that test issues cannot be addressed through a point tool approach, but must be an integrated process throughout the design cycle. This partnership will allow us to apply that philosophy to a significant development project within our company," said Jorgen Hjert, manager of microtechnology at Ericsson Telecom. "With the design automation expertise Cadence provides and the real-world experience our own hardware designers have, we feel this joint development effort is uniquely qualified to address the increasing challenges of our product design process."
"As a leading electronic product developer, Ericsson is directly in touch with the pressing issues of complex ASIC design. Given the pressures they face, we are committed to providing a comprehensive test solution that will help accelerate their design process and yield better quality results," said Jeffrey Miller, president of Cadence's CAE Division. "And, since this development work will be undertaken in the context of an actual design project, we are confident that the solution our two companies produce will address the needs of ASIC designers pursuing state-of-the-art designs under these same pressures."
Cadence will begin commercial shipments of the initial release of the test solution in the fourth quarter of 1992.
