CABLE & WIRELESS CREATES NEW NORTH AMERICAN COMPANY, NAMES NEW CEO & PRESIDENT

 LONDON, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Cable and Wireless plc (NYSE: CWP) announced it has established a new North American company, called Cable & Wireless Incorporated, which will be responsible for all sales, marketing, operations and development of its businesses in North America.
 C. Alan Peyser has been named chief executive officer, and Gabe Battista has been named president and chief operating officer of the new company effective Sept. 1, 1993. Nigel Wallbridge has been named president, international corporate accounts, reporting to Battista. John Davenport, who has served as chief executive officer of Cable & Wireless North America since 1988, will retire.
 James Ross, chief executive of Cable and Wireless plc, said the new company is being formed in response to the company's increased emphasis on the U.S. marketplace and its desire to provide seamless telecommunications services to customer segments of all sizes.
 Cable & Wireless Incorporated will be composed of Cable & Wireless Communications, which primarily serves small and medium-sized businesses, and Cable & Wireless Americas, which serves large multinational corporations and carriers.
 "By combining the two divisions, Cable & Wireless will be in a superior position to serve U.S.-based businesses and carriers of all sizes for communications in the U.S. and around the world," said Ross. "Our goal is to maintain our leadership position in the U.S. business communications marketplace."
 Peyser, 59, founded Cable & Wireless Communications in 1975. Originally known as TDX Systems, Inc., the company provided call accounting and network management services to corporate clients. Peyser has also held senior management positions with NASA, Systems Technology Associates and the Communications Satellite Corporation (COMSAT).
 Battista, 48, joined Cable & Wireless Communications in February 1991 as chief operating officer. Prior to joining Cable & Wireless, Battista served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of National Telephone Services (NTS). Before joining NTS, he held senior management positions with US Sprint's eastern group, GTE Telenet and General Electric where he had a successful 17-year career.
 Wallbridge, 35, joined Cable & Wireless in 1992. Prior to joining Cable & Wireless, Wallbridge headed the manufacturing technology office for Hawker Siddeley plc, a U.K.-based mechanical engineering firm. Wallbridge is a graduate of Leeds University (London) and INSEAD (France).
