C.J. WAYLAN NAMED EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT - MARKETING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT FOR GTE TELECOMMUNICATIONS PRODUCTS AND SERVICES GROUP

 ATLANTA, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Telecommunications Products and Services Group President Terry S. Parker today named Dr. C.J. "Jerry" Waylan to the newly created position of executive vice president - marketing and business development for GTE Telecommunications Products and Services (TP&S) Group, effective immediately.
 In making the announcement, Parker said, "I am pleased that Jerry will be joining the TP&S Atlanta team and look forward to his leadership, expertise and professionalism in managing this very important area in the months ahead." Waylan, 51, currently is president of GTE Spacenet Corp.
 In his new position, Waylan's main focus will involve GTE's wireless businesses. He will be responsible for the management of emerging new business technologies; personal communications services (PCS); wireless data services; other major new product and service developments; brand management and national accounts.
 After serving for 20 years as an officer in the U.S. Navy, Waylan, in 1981, founded the Southern Pacific Satellite Co. which was acquired by GTE in 1983. He was named president of GTE Spacenet in 1985.
 Waylan holds a bachelor's degree in engineering physics from the University of Kansas and master's and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. He currently serves on several industry and advisory boards, including GTE's Operations Committee, on which he will continue to serve.
 "As Jerry transitions to his new position, Howard Svigals, currently GTE Spacenet's vice president/general manager - Satellite Services, will serve as acting president of GTE Spacenet on an interim basis," said Parker.
