C-17s REACH 400 FLYING HOUR MARK; SET SINGLE FLIGHT DURATION RECORD
EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The McDonnell Douglas/U.S. Air Force C-17 fleet surpassed the 400 flying hour mark last Friday, Aug. 14, with T-1, the first test aircraft, setting a new single-flight record of 7.1 hours.
T-1's flight Friday exceeded the previous longest C-17 flight of 6.6 hours set by P-2, the second production aircraft, on July 13. P-2 flew 2.0 hours on Friday bringing the combined C-17 total for the day to 9.1 hours, also a record.
T-1 exceeded 300 consecutive flying hours on Thursday during its 93rd mission, when it flew 3.7 hours. During the flight, the first C-17 opened its cargo door and ramp in flight for the second time and continued structural aerodynamic damping investigations.
On the previous day, Aug. 12, T-1, with a gross weight of 350,000 pounds took off using only 1,200 feet of runway, despite temperatures at Edwards AFB of 100 degrees.
T-1 has now recorded 310.7 flying hours since its inaugural flight in September 1991. P-2 has flown 43.9 hours during 14 missions; while P-1, the first production aircraft, has recorded 52.3 hours in 14 flights. Flying hours to date for the C-17 fleet total 406.9.
The last 100 hours of C-17 flight testing were accomplished in 32 days, compared with 66 days to record the previous 100 hours, showing a marked increase in rate of flying for the current three- aircraft fleet. The first 100 hours of flying were accomplished in 124 days, and the second 100 in 112 days.
Meanwhile, the third production aircraft, P-3, has begun engine runs at McDonnell Douglas' Long Beach, Calif., facility. P-3, which is scheduled to fly later this summer, is now 96 percent complete.
