C-17 SETS TWO MORE WORLD RECORDS

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Two additional world records in the payload-to-altitude category were set this month by a U.S. Air Force/McDonnell Douglas C-17 Globemaster III, bringing to 21 the total of records set by the versatile new transport.
The new records, set during a routine test mission, were established by P-1, the first production C-17, on Oct. 8. The records were set in the 551,000-to-661,000 pound gross weight category.
The first record involved flying a 161,023 pound (73,040 kg.) payload to an altitude of 8,860 feet (2,000 m). The previous record in this weight class was 67,177 pounds (30,471 kg.) set by a former Soviet aircraft in 1989.
The second involved setting a new world record in the 154,000 pound (70,000 kg.) class to an altitude of 32,152 feet (9,800 m). The C-17 actually carried a 161,023 pound (73,192 kg.) payload to that altitude.
The two records set this month, plus five other world records established last August, are pending certification by the National Aeronautic Association. The 14 world records established by the C-17 in December 1992 already have been certified by the NAA.
As of today, the six-aircraft flight test fleet based here has recorded 575 missions and 2,150 flying hours. In addition, the two C-17s delivered to the first USAF operational unit at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., have flown 36 missions for 127 flying hours.
To date, the combined C-17 fleet totals are 611 flights and 2,277 hours.
