Bystander saves baby in canal crash; HERO.

A 14-month-old baby was saved from drowning yesterday after the car she was in crashed into a canal, an air ambulance service said.

The baby girl is now in intensive care after being pulled from the canal in Barrow-on-Trent, Derbyshire, by a mystery bystander shortly after 3.30pm.

The car was submerged in the water for between three and five minutes when the unnamed good Samaritan, seeing the drama unfold, managed to rescue the baby and her mother.

The baby went into cardiac arrest but the bystander managed to administer CPR.

The child and her mother were flown by Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre.

The mother escaped serious injury but the baby has been taken into intensive care.

A spokeswoman for the air ambulance service said the baby had been suffering from hypothermia.
