Bye-bye, Bob Barr. (Congress).

Republican congressman Bob Barr, the architect of the infamous Defense of Marriage Act, has been served divorce papers by his Georgia constituents. Barr lost the August 20 GOP primary in Georgia's seventh congressional district to fellow incumbent John Linder, who was forced to run against Barr after Democrats in the state legislature redrew district lines. Barr, a four-term incumbent who is a favorite of many conservatives but often at odds with more mainstream Republicans, won't be missed by supporters of gay rights.

"Bob Barr earned the distinction as the most antigay member of the House," said David Smith, communications director for the gay advocacy group Human Rights Campaign. "He used his platform to do harm legislatively, but he also spoke out at every opportunity against gay people. His demise is welcomed."
