Thumbs up at 'downbeat'

It is the first year that DownBeat magazine's annual student music awards have included a category for community colleges, and the Lane Jazz Ensemble at Lane Community College won the competition for best large ensemble. It competed against schools from middle school through college that submitted recordings. LCC has the largest community college music program in Oregon, and it gives $40,000 annually in scholarships. Paul Krueger is the director.

Sherlock's steampunk

It will be a new twist on an old play when director Jonathan Siegle and his Springfield High School drama troupe put on "A Steampunk Sherlock Holmes" this weekend and next at the school's Studio Theatre, 875 Seventh St. The original was written in 1897 by Arthur Conan Doyle and William Gillette, but this version will be accompanied not only by a string quartet but also by an original steampunk art exhibit. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and again May 14-16. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens, at 541-914-8095; by email,; or at the door.
