The art of Celebration
The 28th Eugene Mayor's Art Show kicks off this evening with an opening reception and unveiling of the juried exhibit, the city's most prestigious and best-attended art competition.
Fred Crafts will emcee the opening ceremony and awards presentation starting at 5:30 p.m. today in the lobby of the Hult Center, Seventh Avenue and Willamette Street, before opening the doors to the exhibit in the Jacobs Gallery downstairs.
A three-person jury - gallery owner Karin Clarke, Art Annex owner Kirsten Shende and art collector Lee Gordon Michels - chose 46 pieces for this year's show, out of 270 entries submitted in digital form. Performing at tonight's reception will be Mood Area 52.
Meanwhile, check out the Salon du Peuple, an alternative show at Eugene's New Zone Gallery, 164 W. Broadway; it offers a venue for works rejected by the mayor's show as well as other works. The salon reception, with food and music, runs from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. today. Both shows run through Oct. 8.
