Oregon farmstead, artisan and specialty cheeses won 12 awards, including two for first place, at the American Cheese Society's annual cheese competition earlier this month in Raleigh, N.C. The cheeses were judged by a team of 34 cheese specialists including food science professors, professional cheesemongers, retail cheese managers and industry experts.
First place: Tillamook for its Colby cheese; Rogue Creamery for its Oregon blue cheese.
Second place: Rogue Creamery for its Flora Nelle blue cheese; Willamette Valley Cheese for its Perrydale Thick-rind Cheese; Tillamook for its Tillamook Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter.
Third place: Rivers Edge Chevre for its Beltane goat cheese; Willamette Valley for its Farmstead Gouda; Tillamook for its Special Reserve Extra Sharp Cheddar; River's Edge for its Siltcoos cheese; Ochoa's Queseria for its Don Froylan Queso Oaxaca cheese; Tillamook for its Tillamook Hot Habaero Jack Cheese; and Briar Rose Creamery for its Chocolate Chevre Truffles.
