A businessman allegedly offered a bribe of Dh1.5 million to an anti-narcotics police officer to release him from police custody, the Court of First Instance heard on Tuesday.

The 53-year-old Iranian defendant was also charged with possessing 3.6 grams of opium and eight pills of Alprazolam, a restricted drug for panic or anxiety disorder, for personal use. He was also accused of using other drugs including morphine and codeine.

An anti-narcotics police lieutenant said during investigation that he was part of the team that arrested the defendant from Al Mamzar in January based on a tip-off. He looked tense.

The accused claimed that the narcotic pills found in his car belonged to his wife who was on medication. He admitted that he used opium about two weeks before his arrest.

The lieutenant learnt later from a police sergeant that the defendant offered him a cheque worth Dh1.5 million in bribe to help and release him from custody.

The police sergeant told the prosecutor that the defendant offered him the Dh1.5-million cheque to help him out of the problem and promised that he would get him into business projects later without the sergeant having to pay any sums.
