These early works were primarily utilitarian and were decorated with abstract and geometric patterns. In the 15 th century, the patterns started depicting people and animals. By the 16 th century, the Umbrian region, especially Deruta, has established itself as a major majolica center. It became popular to have dinnerware designed with the family crest. Before the advent of majolica dinnerware, food was served from large wooden plates.The art of majolica continues today in much the same way as it originated.
