Busiest Calling Day Expected by Ameritech to be Monday After Thanksgiving

DETROIT, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ameritech (NYSE: AIT) officials again are predicting the Monday after Thanksgiving, Dec. 2, will be the busiest business calling day of the year in the five Great Lakes states it serves -- Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin -- generating as many as 272 million calls. Last year, 270.5 million were made on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Calling volume on an average Monday is about 250 million calls.

"We're looking at every conceivable type of call," explained Gary Fox, director of operations in Ameritech Network Services. "Local calls, long distance calls within the region and outside the region and calls coming into the area are all calculated. We literally count every call Ameritech connects or switches from our network to the facilities of dozens of other companies."

Fox pointed out that the main reason the Monday after Thanksgiving is the busiest business calling day is that many businesses had the long four-day weekend off.

"There's another factor that may add to this year's volume," Fox observed. "This is not just a Monday after a holiday weekend, it's also the first business day of the month, which may have some impact on volumes."

"It's also the start of the holiday shopping season. Following the Thanksgiving weekend, retailers will be able to gauge sales and place their orders beginning that Monday," Fox said.

"As we do every day, year round, we'll be monitoring the network to make sure there are plenty of clear paths for calls to be connected," Fox said. "As one area gets congested, we'll reroute calls and perform other network management functions to make certain every call has the same chance of being completed."
