Busbar Trunking System - Engr. Muneer S Godil, President / Principal Engr., M G Engineering Associates.

In commercial and industrial distribution systems the method adopted for transportation of electrical energy from source to load is through insulated conductor cables, which are run on overhead cable trays and underground concrete trenches. This conventional cable system has high material and installation cost as well as longer installation time.

The insulated cable systems have other heat bearing limitations due to inherent characteristics of the insulation materials used in cable manufacturing. The energy loss element associated along the entire length, occurs due to inefficient use of electrical energy. Moreover, the flow of high currents in the event of a short circuit or overloads can cause the cable to catch fire, as its insulation is inflammable which consequently also damages the other cables laid in the proximity.

Besides these characteristics sometimes the termination of cables in the switchgear is mechanically and electrically imperfect, which in most cases are the cause of electrical faults and fire hazards. This article by Engr. Muneer S Godil, President / Principal Engineer at M.G. Engineering

Associates highlights the advantages of Busbar Trunking System (BTS). Soorty Enterprises (spinning unit), International Textiles (processing unit), Zaman Textiles (weaving unit) and Union Fabrics (weaving unit) are some of successful examples of Busway Systems in textile mills.

The Busbar Trunking System, also known as Busways, involves distribution of electrical power using set of copper/ aluminum bus bars enclosed in suitable box with high degree of protection against any ingress of foreign bodies.

Busbar Trunking System BTS, also called Busways, stands out for ease of installation, flexibility, reusability and number of possible connection points. The Busways offer numerous advantages for a workplace aiming at trouble free and long service life. The cost of Busbar has been a point of concern for many designers and investors, however it is important to note that, an investor should not compare the material cost of maintenance free Busbar System against the conventional cable system.

The sandwich construction Busbars have very good mechanical strength and can withstand higher fault level characteristic and low voltage drop. This means much lower losses, allowing more efficient use of energy.

The type of Busway System as provided by M G Engineering has a compact arrangement, making it ideal to assimilate into building structures, while making it aesthetically pleasing in working areas of an installation. The exclusion of PVC insulation has made it environment friendly by eliminating the production of toxic gases.

The modular structure of Busbar Trunking system is suitable for various kinds of buildings and industrial units. In this context, the design of Busbar system can be changed in future and / or moved to another building to be installed once again. It is imperative to highlight that planning, costing and execution of Busway system requires high engineering skills, deep understanding of individual load components and ultimately how they are integrated into a complete installation.

The inflationary trend in cost of material and energy crisis in Pakistan has forced us to use energy efficient and economical technologies in comparison to the conventional systems. The consumers and investors should be educated about the energy and cost savings impact with the implementation of latest technology. Benefits of such changes can be seen throughout the operational life of the project.

In Karachi, the first maintenance free Busway Lighting Trunking System in textile industry was planned and implemented by MG Engineering in Soorty Spinning Mills.

Successful design and application of 4000A Power Busway Trunking System in projects like International Textile Mills and Union Fabrics has eliminated the use and dependence on power cables completely from utilities. In both projects even the power plant also supplies power through Busway System.

Moreover the application of low voltage Busway Trunking System for entire power distribution at Zaman Textile Mills and International Textile Mills have made the system more energy efficient thereby eradicating risks associated with maintenance of the system due to power outages and fluctuations etc.
