Burton/Corea/Metheny/Haynes/Holland: Like Minds (Concord Jazz CCD-4803-2).
From an all-star aggregation with what really do appear to be like minds, a CD of tasty, slightly laid back jazz highlighting Gary Burton's work on the vibes. This is not a collection of stellar solos; rather, Like Minds features tight ensemble work with everyone carrying his share of the performing and composing load. Although neither drummer Roy Haynes nor bassist Dave Holland get any songwriting credit, they definitely make a contribution to the shape and direction of the music, which comprises four cuts by Pat Metheny, three by Chick Corea, two by Gary Burton, and one by some guy named George Gershwin. Those looking for musical fireworks will be disappointed, but those who enjoy gently swinging music played with taste and a delicate touch will be greatly rewarded. Just sit and listen to cut six, Burton's "Country Roads," and marvel at how Haynes and Holland drive the music along beneath the three soloists. Good stuff! -- KWN
