Burr-Brown Announces Industry's Fastest Analog Front End Chip for HDSL.

TUCSON, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 2, 1999--

Burr-Brown Corporation (NASDAQ:BBRC) today announced the AFE1224, the industry's fastest Analog Front End (AFE) chip available for HDSL (High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line) communications systems.

The AFE1224 minimizes the size and cost of a single pair HDSL system by providing all of the mixed-signal/analog circuitry needed, including line driver, in a small 28-lead package.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology provides high-speed Internet data transfer using existing copper wire infrastructures. The vast network of copper wire telephone lines, over 600 million lines worldwide, makes DSL an attractive solution for high-speed data transfer.

HDSL, the most widely used DSL technology, is ideal for business oriented T1/E1 data transfer services, as well as local area network extenders and Internet servers.

"At 2.3 mega-bits per second, the AFE1224 provides the highest bit rate available for HDSL analog front ends," said CR Teeple, DSL strategic marketing manager at Burr-Brown. "With this offering, we've not only enhanced our wide range of analog front end solutions, but we've extended our position as the industry's largest volume supplier of analog front ends for the DSL market."

Functionally, the chip consists of transmit and receive sections. The transmit section generates and filters analog signals to create 2B1Q symbols. An on-board differential line driver provides a 13.5dBm signal to the telephone line. The receive section filters and digitizes the symbol data received from the telephone line.

The AFE1224 features programmable power dissipation and scaleable data rate (allowing the chip to operate at speeds from 64kbps to 2.320Mbps, with no complex external circuitry). The product uses only 385mW for full-speed operation.

The AFE1224 is priced from $14.40 in 1,000 piece quantities and housed in a 28-lead SSOP package. Delivery is from stock.
