Burn centre faces acute shortage of anaesthetists.

MULTAN:Pak Italian Modern Centre is facing acute shortage of anaesthetists wherein only

two medical officers (MOs) of anaesthesia are working against total 28 posts.

A well placed source at Centre told APP here on Wednesday that

the patients underwent operations in the Burn Centre six days a week

with only two MOs who did not give general anaesthesia to patients

for four to six hours long operations because they could not take


The source informed, the post of one professor and associate

professor each, 2 assistant professors, 6 senior registrars,

15 MOs and 3 House officers (HOs) for anaesthesia were falling

vacant at the centre adding that the posts were advertised thrice,

but unfortunately no anaesthetist applied for any slot.

The centre had an assistant professor but he left the job due

to some domestic reasons as he hailed from DG Khan, it said

adding that no anaesthetist wanted to join new health facilities.

When approached Burn centre Head, Dr Naheed Chaudhary confirmed

the shortage saying that the situation exited everywhere in Pakistan.

Nishtar Hospital provided them cover in form of provision

of a consultant for anaesthesia, he said.

He hoped that within next three to four years the situation would be improved.

He stated that the issue went unheeded in the past by now

Nishtar hospital had started inducting PGRs for training.

He said that all hospitals of Multan were short of anaesthetists including

Children Complex, Institute of Kidney Diseases, Nishtar

and CPEIC.
