Burglary charges for arrested teens.

TWO teenagers were charged yesterday with burgling the house of a man who was later found dead. The 16-year-old and 17-year-old boys from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, will appear in court later in connection with a break-in at a house on Fifth Avenue in the Galon Uchaf area. The pair were also arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of the body of 50-year-old occupant David John Hoddinott on Monday afternoon. A spokeswoman for South Wales Police confirmed the body had been formally identified by a relative and the death was no longer being treated as murder.

She said, "A 17-year-old and a 16-year-old are due to appear at Pontypridd magistrates' court today. A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday and a file in relation to his death will be submitted to the coroner."

Institute pledges a 20% carbon cut

MEMBERS of the WI in Wales have pledged to reduce their personal carbon footprints by 20% - a reduction of some 10,000 tonnes - as part of an national environmental campaign.

The move forms part of the Carbon Challenge campaign to reduce emissions.

Alison Austin from Pontcanna and Canton WI in Cardiff said, "As a busy family, the challenge for us is to be realistic about our choices and I have found that by aiming for small changes the Carbon Challenge can fit into our lifestyle.

"For example, with a newborn and a toddler, walking with a pram is something we do everyday, so I make sure that we try to walk to places as much as possible rather than using the car."

Store card charge warning on site

STORE cards charge average interest rates of 24.4%, outweighing the benefits of any discounts they offer for people who do not clear their balances immediately, a financial website warned yesterday.

MoneyExpert.com said someone who spent pounds 1,270 on a store card this Christmas and took a year to clear their debt would pay around pounds 310 in interest.

But if the same amount was spent on a credit card with an average introductory interest rate of 5.9% the annual bill would be just pounds 75 - a difference of pounds 235. It added even standard credit card rates were cheaper than store cards at an average of 16.5%, nearly 8% less than people paid on store cards.
