Bungle brings back memories for Voice coach Ricky Wilson.
A MERSEYSIDE entertainer who used to be Bungle on Rainbow failed to make the cut on The Voice - but made judge Ricky Wilson's day.
Paul Cullinan, who played Bungle between 1993 and 1996, had the cheering crowd on their feet as he sang Mustang Sally in the first episode of the new series.
But the 48-year-old, who is originally from Birkenhead, didn't impress the celebrity judges enough to make them spin their chairs around for him.
However, coach Ricky Wilson was impressed when Paul announced he had donned the brown bear suit in the hit children's television show. The Kaiser Chiefs' frontman jumped for joy and said: "You were Bungle? "Can you do the voice?" Ricky added: "When you say entertainer, that's exactly what you did, you had the audience on their feet, you had them all singing along. And you had all of us singing along as well."
Paul, who was joined at the blind audition by his two daughters, mum and his Ozzy Osborne look-alike pal, said: "It's great being Bungle because of the reaction from people. They are like 'Oh my goodness me, you were Bungle in Rainbow?" Singer Ricky was the only coach to know who Bungle was, and he delivered an impression of George from the show, as he tried to educate new Voice UK addition Rita Ora, Tom Jones and will.i.am to the importance of his childhood icon.
But the audience, both in the studio and at home, were impressed. They chanted Bungle as the former television royalty left the stage.
And within minutes of the programme ending Bungle was trending on Twitter.
will.i.am said: "'You know what would have been awesome, if you had come singing a Barry White song and then we turned around and you were Bungle The Bear. That would have been awesome. It's a play on bears' Kym Marsh's 16-year-old daughter also failed to make it.
The Voice UK continues on BBC One next Saturday night with the second round of blind auditions.
