Wayne Hemingway, the designer, was guest speaker at the gala ceremony in Brighton, sponsored by the British Cement Association and the Concrete Centre.
The winning North projects were the Falstone Tea Rooms, which took the rural design special award, market town, sponsored by the Countryside Agency.
Morpeth's historic market place and town enhancements won a commendation as did Pottergate, in Alnwick.
Another North East project, the Lookout Farm in Whitley Bay, was also recognised.
Vivienne Newlands, Civic Trust awards manager, said: "The 2005 Civic Trust Award winners are projects which are making a real difference to villages, towns and cities across the UK.
"The winners are evidence that our built environment is being improved by all sorts of developments, appropriate to place, community and environment."
