Building codes developed for seismic, energy, fire safety provisions.

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan Engineering council (PEC) has developed Building Code for Seismic Provision, energy provisiosn, and also working on Building Code for Fire Safety Provisions and now implementation of these codes in provinces will be ensured, while approving any site plan.

Besides,PEC has developed standards for engineering contracts, cost and services and 19 PEC Bidding Documents have been promulgated.

" We have taken many initiatives including Energy Audit of PEC Building, Building Retrofitting for lights, Building Energy Code of Pakistan, 178 Kilo Watts On-Grid Solar System for PEC and Planning Commission", an official told reporter.

PEC has also signed MoU with USAID to develop National Electric Safety Code (NESC).

The Council has accredited around 249 Engineering programmes from 95 institutions and universities, besides, registering 154,000 engineers, 1574 consulting engineers, 62,070 constructors and 640 operators.

Official said many international forums have recognized the standards of PEC at par with international standards, and have given membership to PEC.

He told PEC has carried out Accreditation of Engineering Education through Engineering Accreditation & Qualification Equivalence Committee (EA&QEC) based on well recognized parameters and international practices for evaluation of engineering programmes.

He mentioned that PEC is getting international recognition by joining the International forums and participating actively on engineering and technology.

"PEC is now an Associate Member-World Federation of Engineering Organization (WFEO), Member, Federation of Engineering Institutions of Islamic Countries (FEIIC) and Corresponding Member of Commonwealth Engineer's Council (CEC), Member of Network of Accreditation Bodies of Engineering Education of Asia (NABEEA), provisional signatory of Washington Accord (WA) and IPEA".

PEC has attained Full Membership of "Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and Pacific (FEIAP), he said. Last year, PEC developed LEDs and energy efficient lights which reduced lighting load from 46KW to only 5 KW and saved electricity enough to light 50 houses.

"The council will install 500 watt to 5 Kilowatt stand alone solar power systems at various engineering universities, commercial areas and religious places to popularize renewable sources of energy in Pakistan.
