Contract Awarded for Build the new police station for the Michigan City Police Department

Contract Award Date : May 2015

The company's base bid was $9,999,753, and three of the seven alternates were also added. The engineering firm American Structurepoint determined that this bid was responsive to the project's needs.

The Michigan City Board of Public Works and Safety also approved the sale of the current police station to the Redevelopment Commission for $2 million. The sale requires approval by this board as well as by the commission, which approved the sale recently, and by the City Council.

Following the votes, Assistant Chief of Police Tim Richardson said that he was excited that the MCPD will finally receive a new station, which is long overdue. The current station does not have the space and electrical requirements.

Construction at the site of the former Eastport Elementary School should begin within 30 days, he said, and the project may be substantially complete by late summer of 2016. The MCPD should be ready to move in by fall of 2016.

He commended Police Chief Mark Swistek, who has worked on three different committees for more than 10 years to find a new site.
