Brugge can get off to a flyer.

Byline: Mark Langdon

FOOTBALL CLUB BRUGGE v GENK 7.30pm THE Jupiler League play-offs to decide the championship in Belgium begin tonight with CLUB BRUGGE hosting Genk and the home team should open up with a win, writes Mark Langdon.

Brugge finished the regular season in second spot, 15 points ahead of tonight's opponents, and 8-11 seems fair. Brugge lost home and away to Genk this term but they have picked up considerably since then and the calamitous 5-4 reverse at the Jan Breydel Stadium in October is a distant memory. Christoph Daum's team have since won eight of nine at home and key players are returning to form and fitness just in time to fight for the championship. Finishing second would see the club claim a Champions League spot which is the minimum requirement, while Joseph Akpala has racked up 20 goals in all competitions this term.

Vadis Odjidja is earning rave reviews in midfield and his recent return to full fitness will be crucial in this play-off battle, which sees the top six face each other home and away.

Genk are struggling with injuries and have lost four of their last five away fixtures. Championship play-off standings (halved from final points tally in regular season): 34 Anderlecht, 31 Club Brugge, 28 Gent, 26 Standard, 23 Genk, 23 Kortrijk.

Match betting: 8-11 Brugge (Hills), 17-4 Genk (BetVictor), 29-10 draw (BetVictor).

Recommendation Club Brugge 1pt 8-11 Hills
