Bruce can win fans over - Les.
NEWCASTLE United legend Les Ferdinand believes fans will come to love Steve Bruce if the manager delivers winning football.
The Magpies have won just one of their five opening matches - albeit an impressive victory at Tottenham. The club also exited the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle, losing on penalties at home to Leicester City.
Bruce's appointment following the departure of Rafa Benitez drew criticism from disgruntled supporters from the outset. Disappointing opening defeats against Arsenal and Norwich City intensified dissenting voices. Speaking to TALKSPORT, Ferdinand believes whoever succeeded Benitez at St James' Park was always going to face an uphill task with the club's fans.
But the former England striker is convinced fans will be won over if the team deliver on the pitch.
Ferdinand said: "Whoever was going in there after Rafa was going to get this effect.
"They see another manager coming in under the same regime and I think it is more to do with that than with Steve Bruce.
"They've lost someone who they thought would guarantee them staying in the Premier League.
"Steve has got it all to do. I know his heart is in wanting Newcastle to do well and he will give it his best shot.
"The more games he wins, like the last time out against Spurs, the more he will grow in the hearts of fans and keeping them in the Premier League will have the effect it needs to have for Steve Bruce."
