Brown Shoe hooks bass; Ziggy artist in development.

* Brown Shoe signs a long-term footwear license with Phillips-Van Heusen (PVH) for the Bass brand, and will market men's, women's and children's lines under the label. PVH, which exits the wholesale footwear business with this deal, will continue to run Bass outlet stores.

* Ziggy artist Tom Wilson launches Character Matters, a Cleveland-based company formed to create, develop and revitalize characters for branding and licensing. Its first effort is the donation of two characters created for the non-profit Giraffe Project, which honors people who stick their necks out for the common good.

* Joester-Loria Group this month takes over as licensing agent for Pepsico's brands. Activity will center primarily on Pepsi-Cola, Aquafina and Mountain Dew.

* National Geographic and K-Swiss agree to end their footwear licensing agreement which was due to run through 2005. "Attempting to implement this business strategy in the post-9/11 retail marketplace proved to be unfortunately timed," said K-Swiss.
