Brown's efforts consistently win recognition.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.--Jack Brown has received a number of honors and awards over the years, recognizing him for his achievements in the supermarket industry as well as for his involvement in the community his company serves.

Over the years Brown has received more than 30 awards, honorary degrees and other forms of recognition. One of the first came in October 1985, when he was honored by the citizens of Southern California's Inland Empire with the "Book of Golden Deeds" award for his service to others.

A number of major honors have followed since then; here are a few of the biggest:

* In 1992, Brown was one of 10 Americans to receive that year's Horatio Alger Award, in recognition of his contributions to his country and the American dream. Fellow honorees that year included former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, author and poet Maya Angelou and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

* In 2005, Brown received the Sidney R. Rabb Award from the Food Marketing Institute for a lifetime of service to his community, his customers and the supermarket industry.

* In 2008, Brown received the Semper Fidelis award, which was presented by the Commandant of the Marine Corps on behalf of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

Last year Brown received another honor he is particularly proud of--the 2011 Patriot Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

The panel that decides who will receive the award is made up entirely of people who have won the Congressional Medal of Honor, and the Patriot Award is the society's highest honor; past recipients include Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart, Will Rogers and former presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Proud to be a patriotic American born on Flag Day, U.S. Navy veteran Brown says the award, presented at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, is a special honor.
