Business & Technology Editors

Brother International Corporation today introduces its first single-pass color printer for workgroups - the Brother HL-4000CN.

Featuring fast up to 16 page per minute color and monochrome print speeds, this network-ready model comes standard with automatic duplex printing, up to 1200x1200 dpi resolution, Adobe PostScript3(R) emulation, and comprehensive network management tools. The HL-4000CN has an estimated street price of $3,199, and is expected to ship in early April 2002.

"The introduction of our first single-pass model marks our entry into what is fast becoming an important segment of the office color laser market," said Jeff Sandler, Senior Product Manager for Printers. "Our focus with the HL-4000CN is on both value and performance. Our customers will find this particularly evident in the rich set of standard features that are built into it. The HL-4000CN is ideal for workgroups requiring fast, high quality office color printing."

What differentiates the HL-4000CN from the performance of many other color laser printers is its single-pass technology. Unlike multi-pass color print technology, which requires a page to circulate one-time for each color through the printer, a single-pass printer essentially lays down each color with only one pass of the page through the system. For the user, this means significantly faster output speeds for color prints that once took several minutes.

Key among the HL-4000CN's feature set is the ability to print high-resolution text and graphics in rich vibrant colors at fast speeds of up to 16 pages per minute in either color or monochrome.

Also standard on this new single-pass model is a built-in automatic duplex feature. Duplex printing is the convenient method of printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. This feature is particularly helpful where users need to produce print jobs in-house such as color brochures, manuals, flyers, or booklets. For those with economic and environmental concerns, this feature also helps to reduce paper consumption and operating costs.

Whether the user environment is Windows- or Mac-based, the HL-4000CN is equipped with drivers out of the box. It is compatible with most of their operating systems including Windows(R) 95/98/2000/Me/NT4.0/XP and iMac(TM)/iBook(TM)/G3/G4.

Another first for Brother in regard to the HL-4000CN is the inclusion of Adobe(R) PostScript(R) 3TM as one of its standard emulations. In addition to enhancing the quality of graphics rendered in the Mac environment, graphics users in advertising, marketing and other graphic intensive markets will appreciate the HL-4000CN's print speed, performance and compatibility. PCL6 emulation is also standard.

The HL-4000CN also comes standard with a built-in 10/100 BaseT Ethernet web server for network connectivity. This feature enables users to remotely manage the printer through their web-browser and perform a number of operations including viewing and changing printer settings, monitoring printer supplies status and managing the printer's hard drive.

The HL-4000CN has a number of expansion options to increase productivity and maximize user value. These include the ability to increase paper input capacity by 1,000-sheets. Another key expansion option is a 10GB hard drive, useful for storing print jobs for fast reprinting, as well as for form or font storage. These items are available separately.

With the introduction of the HL-4000CN, Brother further extends its line of network-ready office laser printers and focus on feature-rich, value-packed models that include a variety of standard features. Brother is again demonstrating it is a quality provider of workgroup office imaging products.
