TRADE union negotiators play their cards close to their chests - never more so than when dealing with the press.

One was being very cagey over the ballot for industrial action by Birmingham City Council workers, urging a hack to wait until an official announcement.

"Can I call you back later to discuss it?" said the reporter.

"You can try but I will be in a strike committee meeting," he replied, somewhat letting the cat out of the bag.
