Brokers Roundtable Organization Formed.

Twenty-four NASFT member principals of Specialty Food brokerages from California to Florida met in San Diego the Friday evening prior to the Fancy Food Show to form the Brokers Roundtable.

"This organization will be a forum for specialty food brokers across the country to discuss the varied topics that concern our businesses," said Lynn Portugal of Pinski-Portugal Associates, of California, one of the founders instrumental in putting this organization and this meeting together.

The meeting was moderated by the other founder, Sam Cristol of The Cristol Group, Inc., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., at a dinner at The Fishbowl Room on beautiful San Diego Bay.

According to Portugal, a membership committee has been formed and the Roundtable is open to all NASFT Member Brokers in good standing. The discussions at this first meeting centered on such hot topics as the new NASFT Code of Ethics and whether the NASFT has the will to enforce it; how to legally handle non-payment of commissions in a timely manner; how to network with each other as to warning of "dishonest" manufacturers; the effect of gas prices on sales reps; and other topics related to brokers' everyday business.

"We plan to have a similar meeting in New York on the Friday prior to NASFT in July to promote the exchange of ideas and information within the NASFT broker community, and we hope to have a much larger crowd," said Sam Cristol. "The dinner in San Diego was limited by space constraints, but we have a committee looking for a larger room in New York."
