Broadening the definition of arts participation.

Attendance at classical music concerts and art galleries has declined in the United States, but this is not a complete picture of people's interest or participation in arts activities. The National Endowment for the Arts is broadening its traditional benchmarks for measuring arts participation.

Now, the NEA is looking at a wider variety of artistic genres and including people's arts participation via electronic media, as well as involvement in personal arts creation. By this measure, some 75% of Americans are active arts participants.

Studying these trends will help promoters, managers, and curators become more engaged with their prospective audiences, such as through innovative arts education programs.
