British Telecommunications Selects Rational Rose Product Family as Corporate Standard for Object-Oriented Design.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 1, 1996--Rational Software Corporation today announced that British Telecommunications plc (BT) has selected Rational Rose as its standard object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD) tool for all new object-oriented design activities in its software-development operations.

Last summer, BT invited leading OOAD tools vendors to compete for selection as BT's corporate-wide object-oriented design tool supplier. BT was looking for a supplier that could fulfill the following criteria: -0-

-- Good technical products

-- Strong local as well as international support

-- Strong training and consultancy support

-- A stable and successful business -0-

After a nine-month evaluation period, Rational's Rational Rose product family was selected as the recommended analysis and design tool for all new object-oriented design projects throughout BT. The decision marks the end of a long selection process to standardize on tools and suppliers for software development at BT.

Rational Rose, the industry's leading object modeling tool, provides capabilities for object modeling, controlled iterative development, and round-trip engineering. The Rational Rose family includes Rational Rose/C++, Rational Rose/Visual Basic, Rational Rose/PowerBuilder, Rational Rose/Forte, Rational Rose/Smalltalk, Rational Rose/Java, and Rational Rose/Ada.

John Gooch, head of the Software Engineering Improvement Programme at BT's Ipswich Software Engineering Centre (ISEC) said, "BT is one of the largest development sites in Europe, and as such it became clear that we needed to standardize our approach to software engineering. We have spent over nine months thoroughly evaluating the marketplace to find the best overall solution for object-oriented analysis and design."

BT realized the business benefits of having a consistent object-oriented software-development process throughout the company. Rational is able to support this process using the Booch methodology and the Rational Rose product family.

The strength of Rational's UK team, with its ability to provide local support, training, and mentoring, was also a key factor in the selection of Rational as the supplier of choice.

John Lambert, managing director of Rational UK, commented, "Rational Rose was already being used within BT in a number of projects. Thus BT could watch the progress and success of these projects, with an emphasis on the technical ability and appropriateness of the tool, as well as Rational's ability to assist in the success of the projects. I am glad to say that we came out on top in all instances. We now look forward to working with BT and providing our products and services on a strategic level throughout the company."

In the last few years, Rational's business has grown. It now has the three leading experts in object-oriented technology today all working for the company (Grady Booch, Jim Rumbaugh, and Ivar Jacobson), and the Unified Modeling Language is due to be released later this year. Moreover, Rational has just announced record year-end results, with revenues in excess of $90 million. These have all proved decisive factors in BT's selection.

BT is one of the world's leading providers of telecommunications services. With a market capitalization of more than L324 billion, it is one of the largest private-sector companies in Europe. Its primary activity is the supply of local, long distance, and international telecommunications services and equipment in the UK, covering 27 million exchange lines. International direct-dialed telephone service is available to more than 200 countries.
