Millions of Britons are set to bask in glorious barbecue weather this weekend as the mini-heatwave brings more balmy temperatures and widespread sunshine.

The mercury will rise to between 17-20C (62-68F) in almost every part of the country with highs of 21C in the Scottish Highlands rivalling some Mediterranean resorts, forecasters say.

Punters having a flutter on the 164th John Smiths Grand National at Aintree are also expected to be kissed by the welcome Spring sunshine, enjoying temperatures of 19C (66F).

However, the early taste of summer is set to slowly fizzle out next week with more unsettled weather moving in to bring the above-average temperatures back down to ground.

Billy Payne, forecaster at MeteoGroup UK, said: "There will be a lot of sunshine across the whole of Britain today and it will be dry pretty much everywhere.

"Temperatures will be higher-than average for the time of year with most places in the south east reaching 20C."

He added: "It will be more of the same on Sunday with dry and warm weather across the UK and highs of 21C (70F)."
