Brisbane swipe top prospect.

Byline: By Ahmer Khokhar

THE Brisbane Lions have taken Laois teenager Conor Meredith to Australia for a two-week trial with the Aussie rules giants.

Meredith was spotted by Brisbane Lions football manager Graeme Allan playing at Dublin City University.

Lions coach Leigh Matthews said recently that "Ireland is a fertile breeding ground for AFL recruitment" and proved his point by snapping up Meredith to play alongside former Laois defender Colm Begley and Mayo starlet Pierce Hanley.

If Meredith decides to turn his back on the GAA he would tally the number of GAA players in the AFL into double figures.

Allan also saw Meredith in action for Laois and described him as a strongrunning athletic type of player needed by the Lions.

"He is similar to Colm Begley and Pierce Hanley, the kind of running player we feel adapts well to our game," he said.

"He is out here for a couple of weeks to have a look at our set-up and so we can have a look at him. We'll see where it goes from there."
