Bring me food, drink and music.

THE first Northumbria Food and Drink Festival will be taking over Vallum Farm in the Tyne Valley today.

The day-long festival will be serving food, local ales and spirits, live music, demos from leading chefs and producers, and a host of fun activities from clay pigeon shooting to bouncy castles.

It's all in aid of Newcastle-based international aid organisation No Strings, which uses puppetry to spread life-saving messages throughout the developing world.

Visitors can sample food from suppliers across the North East, including burger experts Fat Hippo and Newcastle-based burrito bar Zapatista.

The boys from La Petite Creperie will also be creating sweet and savoury crepes, and there will be a hog roast courtesy of WMH Meats. Box Social's Craft Beer Engine and Errant Brewery will be stocked with local ales, while the Vallum team will be showcasing local gins and seasonal cocktails. The market marquee will host more than 30 producers, from jams and chutneys courtesy of Yummy Things, to handmade cheeses from the Northumberland Cheese Company, brews from Ouseburn Coffee and gourmet brownies from The Brownie Bar.

Visitors will also have the chance to find out more about matching wine and food with Gosforth-based Carruthers and Kent, see gun dogs in action and learn the tricks of preparing game with Close House chef Craig Harvey. Three other leading chefs will also be sharing their knowledge and love of local produce and showcasing their skills: Peace and Loaf's Dave Coulson, Rhian Cradock, from The Feathers Inn at Hedley on the Hill, and Martin Charlton of The Old Boathouse and the Fish Shack at Amble.

Funk behemoths King Bee will be headlining the event alongside blues maestro Lomax. There will be country and roots music from Chloe Chadwick and folky sounds from Shipcote and Friends.

Activities for kids will include face painting and pony and tractor rides around the farm, which is billed as the food gateway to Hadrian's Wall. The team from No Strings International will be showcasing their puppet-making skills and screening their films which have been seen around the world.

The Northumbria Food and Drink Festival is between 11am and 5pm at Vallum, Military Road, East Wallhouses, Northumberland, NE18 0LL. Entry is PS5 per car or PS2.50 each for people on foot.
