I WISH to express my appreciation to all concerned regarding the Newmarket open day.

What a day it turned out to be, largely down to the open and friendly manner in which we were all welcomed.

The trainers and their staff were exceptional in their willingness to embrace the invasion, albeit a friendly one.

The experience was a revelation and the memories will linger on for many a day, especially while studying the form and picturing the horses in their surroundings. It will not make the task any easier but will add a certain piquancy.

The whole Newmarket racing industry gave the impression of being vibrant and buoyant, with its big investment in experience, time and devotion to the care of these magnificent creatures - e ven the ones who have a reputation for biting!

This positive feeling was transmitted from all those personnel involved with the work of the stables.

It was hard not to see everything through rose-coloured blinkers, but this was the general feeling I had throughout the whole weekend.

Newmarket always exudes a contented air, but especially so at this open day - no more so than when visiting the inspiring Rous Memorial Court and enjoying their wonderful welcome and much-needed tea.

The day was no easy task and felt somewhat like a marathon against the clock. My guess is there will be even more stables open next year, and it will therefore take more than the four years of visits I had calculated I need to get around them all.

So thanks to all of you who played any part in making the day the great event it was and for it living up to expectations. Your chosen charities will have deserved every penny from all your efforts.

See you next year.
