Brilliant Stewart saves the day; Sheffield Steelers ???????????????????????? x Coventry Blaze????????????????????????????x (Penalty shoot-out).

BRIAN Stewart pulled out more amazing saves to help Blaze steal two points from Sheffield on Saturday.

The acrobatic netminder made a brilliant pad save among a string of other stops as Blaze won 3-2 after penalty shots.

Blaze put on a battling performance in a game that saw Kevin Noble need stitches after suffering a bad cut, and spent a lot of time on the penalty kill.

They took the lead early when Brett Robinson arrived at the net with perfect timing to convert a cross from Brenden Walker on the right wing.

Steelers equalised when a sloppy cross ice pass by Michael Quesnele in his defensive zone went straight onto the stick of Mathieu Roy who skated clear and buried his effort.

The home side moved ahead when Ben O'Connor got the puck in acres of space and faked his shot to pull Stewart out of position.

But Blaze hit back with Robinson's second of the net when the centreman again went to the net and the puck cannoned off a Sheffield body before hitting him and going in.

Steelers had plenty of powerplay chances in the final period but Coventry held on, including a stick save by Stewart with just two seconds left on the clock.

Overtime came and went and Stewart stonewalled the Steelers in penalty shots. At the other end Drew Fisher pulled off one of his fancy moves to beat back-up Brad Day, and Jordan Pietrus snapped a shot through the Sheffield goalie to seal the win.

Coach Chuck Weber said: "The effort, the courage, the desperation we showed - it wasn't pretty but we persevered.

"I said to the guys this was one of those games where we had to throw pucks at the net "The two pad save Stewart made in the first period should be the highlight save of the year in the Elite League." Sheffield: 14.27 Mathieu Roy, 31.47 Ben O'Connor (Mathieu Roy).

Coventry: 1.41 Brett Robinson. (Brenden Walker, Jim Jorgensen), 39.18 (Kevin Noble, Brenden Walker). Shots: Sheffield 30, Coventry 26.

Penalty minutes: Sheffield 8, Coventry 14.
