Bridge closures to finish paint job.

MOTORISTS are being reminded that lane restrictions will be in place on Newport Bridge from today until the end of August so the final sections of paintwork can be completed.

The inside lanes will be closed so the painting of the inward facing sections of the bridge arches can start. Once the arches are finished, the 80-year-old Grade II listed structure will have been fully repaired and repainted.

The central lanes will remain open in both directions and access for cyclists and pedestrians will also be maintained on the footway.

Meanwhile, the A1032, which runs across Newport Bridge, will be closed between 8pm and 6am until mid-July so the remaining scaffolding can continue to be removed.

The iconic bridge - last given a lick of paint 15 years ago - is being painted red and silver to mark its 80th anniversary.

But the troubled revamp has been plagued by delays and rising costs - as well as creating months of traffic misery for Teesside commuters.
