Brexit will expedite decline of the UK.
AS the world stands on the brink of a financial meltdown and the threat of global conflict raises its ugly head, the UK is about to leave the EU.
In the process of doing so the world watches in disbelief as the UK destroys its reputation as a pragmatic, united and rational nation.
I predicted in a letter at the time of the referendum that Brexit would divide the nation and lead to years negotiating our way through a legal minefield that would end in a loselose outcome for the UK and the EU. The only winners will be Putin, Trump and Xi Jinping.
It saddens me to witness the UK abdicating its leadership role in Europe where it made an important contribution in creating a rules based economy and was in a strong position to shape the future rules of the EU. Instead we will become observers of an evolving EU that will impact on Britain's prosperity and security.
Those who think that Trump will give us a good trade deal must be living on another planet. Trump couldn't give a damn about the special relationship and will exploit the UK's weak negotiating hand.
With or without a deal, Brexit will expedite the decline of the UK as a major player and rule-maker on the world stage.
