Brexit 'will cost us top NATO role'.
BREXIT could cost the UK a key position in NATO, a former secretary general of the alliance has warned.
Former defence secretary Lord George Robertson, who led NATO from 1999 to 2004, said it appeared the Tories were ready to give up the position of Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, held by a Briton since 1951, after Brexit.
He told a Lords committee the Government wanted a top British general to have a turn chairing NATO's military committee, but that would mean abandoning the permanent deputy's role for a temporary position.
He added: "I can't see any explanation or justification for it publicly."
