Brewing Chemists hold Annual Meeting

The 56th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Brewing Chemists was held May 20-24, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The content of the meeting included a Microbrewers Seminar, a New Products and Services Seminar, 37 technical papers, and 11 poster presentations. The presiding officer was David Diffor, Pfizer, Inc.

Approximately 320 people attended the meeting, representing ASBC members, their spouses and children and members from the international brewing community. Besides the United States and Canada, attendees were present from Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, The Netherlands, Santo Domingo, South Africa, Venezuela and Peru. Members from the Institute of Brewing, and the European Brewing Convention were also in attendance, including EBC secretary general, Marjolein van Wijngaarden.

During the final banquet, president Diffor presented the first Eric Kneen Memorial Award which was established by the ASBC in memory of Dr. Kneen to commemorate his dedication to the Society and his efforts to establish the Journal of the American Society of Brewing Chemists as a high-quality scientific publication. The first recipients of the award were Dr. Brian Clarke, Russell Jones, and Terry Kavanaugh, for their paper entitled, "Determination of Carbaryl Residues in Malt and Beer and Their Impact on Beer Quality," which was published in the Journal. The paper was presented during 1987's annual meeting.

The gavel was passed to Inge Russell, Labatt Brewing Co., Ltd., who will serve as ASBC president for the year. Other newly-elected officers include, Richard Pyler, Coors Brewing Co, president-elect; Peter Gales, Anheuser-Busch, Inc., vice president; John Piening, Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Co., secretary; and Sherman Chan, Rahr Malting Co., treasurer.
