Brave swimmers set to take on Pier to Pier Challenge.

MORE than 30 intrepid swimmers are taking to the Menai Straits on Saturday, September 7, to swim two miles - Pier to Pier - from Beaumaris to Bangor to raise money for local cancer fund, #TeamIrfon.

Building on the success of the 2014 and 2017 #TeamIrfon swims, which together raised PS16,000 for the fund that was established by the late healthcare campaigner Irfon Williams and his wife Becky, the Beaumaris Pier to Bangor Pier swim will begin at 4pm.

The event's volunteer organisers are encouraging people to go to Bangor Pier from 4pm to enjoy the spectacle, cheer on the impressive team of fundraisers and make the most of the food and drinks that will be available on the pier.

Becky Williams from Bangor, who oversees #TeamIrfon alongside Alaw Unit staff, said: "Irfon wasn't able to be at the first #TeamIrfon swim, but he was so pleased when he heard what a success that day had been. He loved the idea of families from across the community coming together to have fun in one of the most beautiful locations in Bangor. As a family, we're so pleased that Trystan and Anna have organised another swim, and that the swimmers have already raised such a terrific sum of money this year.

"We recently heard from a lovely lady who goes to Alaw every week for chemo injections and bone strengtheners who said that she actually looks forward to her weekly hospital visits because of the reflexology she receives when she goes.

"She thinks there is no better painkiller than a session with the reflexologist and she was hugely grateful for the service, which is all funded by #TeamIrfon and other donations given to the Alaw Unit.

"When you hear stories like that and learn of the difference that #TeamIrfon is making, it really motivates you to do more.

"We often receive feedback about what a difference the complementary therapies, wigs and other services that #TeamIrfon supports make and we have plans to do lots more to help families affected by cancer and bereavement over the next year with the money we're raising."

Event organiser Trystan said: "This is quite a challenge, but we're certainly up for it! We've got a great group of swimmers that are taking part, and I really hope that our local communities are able to come out to show their support for them on Bangor Pier.

"The wonderful kiosks on the pier will be opening into the evening, and there will be a bar, so all the family can enjoy warm drinks and food whilst taking in the spectacular scenery and celebrating the achievements of the swimmers.

"You never know, you may even spot some dolphins swimming pier to pier, too!

"We're incredibly grateful to the team who run and work on Bangor Pier as well as Duncan Gilroy of Seawake in Menai Bridge and the event sponsors M&J Welding Ltd, Venturers Trust and Wild Horse Brewing Company who have enabled this extraordinary event to take place."

The "Pier to Pier Swim Party" will start from 4pm at Bangor Pier.

Entry on to the pier will be free from 3.30pm and food and drink will be available on the pier into the evening.
