Brave justice; Mailbag letters also appear online at Mailbag.

AT LAST we've got one brave person, Eddie Jefferson JP ('Retiring Huddersfield magistrate Eddie Jefferson's stunning attack on legal system', Mailbag, October 14) to express the truth about our justice system which has gone completely the wrong way, favouring the offender at the expense of the victim.

For the older generation it was clear a long time ago, you have just to open any newspaper today and compare it with the news of 1960. At that time streets were safe at night. Mugging, burglary, vandalism were rarely big news, shooting and murder were extremely rare.

Today it's common news nearly every day. Motorists were cautioned for minor offences, car thieves were dealt with harshly to discourage them from offending in the future and it worked.

Today we have found a lovely name for them, joy riders, and they are seldom caught so we have plenty of them. Yet the motorist is harshly penalised for a minor slip-up.

Law-abiding people are dismayed do-gooders who always find excuses for the offenders. Let's have more of the Eddie Jefferson kind.
