A PRIEST made famous by becoming a human guinea pig for a HIV vaccine is to take up a new role.
Fr Kieran Creagh, who was awarded the Irish International Person Of The Year award in 2004, also hit the headlines when he was shot during a violent robbery in South Africa.
He is to start working alongside Fr Gary Donegan and other clerics in the Holy Cross parish in Ardoyne, North Belfast, at the end of the month.
Fr Creagh has been living on Tory Island off the Donegal coast for several years recovering from the trauma of the 2007 robbery.
He lived in a property attached to the Leratong Aids hospice he established in the township of Atterid-geville. In 2003, although free from the virus, he volunteered to be injected with the trial vaccine and risked his life to help sufferers.
Welcoming news of his arrival, Fr Donegan said his fellow Passionist is "very energetic".
He added: "He's been on Tory for a few years now, tending to people's pastoral needs there, and this is his next big foray, I suppose.
"He's not the sort of fella to let grass grow under his feet, so it'll be interesting to see him coming up and getting stuck in.
"He single-handedly built that hospice out in South Africa, then he allowed himself to be injected with the vaccine, then the robbery.
"He really is an incredible character, a bit of a maverick maybe and someone who'll bring a lot of energy to the area."
The move comes after a reshuffle with Fr Donegan leaving his role as rector and moving to the Passionists' Tobar Mhuire retreat in Crossgar, Co Down.
