Brandon in mourning for tragic Steel; GAME ON: SPEEDWAY.

FORMER Brandon mascot Mark Steel, tragically drowned this week in a diving accident off the Dorset coast, was planning to emigrate to Australia in the next month or so.

Steel, 22, was mascot of the Bees from 1995 to 1998 and an experienced diver. He was reported missing by the skipper of dive boat Killer Prawn when he surfaced but appeared to lose buoyancy.

A search by a helicopter and five lifeboats over the wreck of the Kyarra, off Anvil Point, failed to find any trace of him.

Mick Bell, the former Coventry boss who was manager of Swindon when Steel rode for the Robins, said: "As a rider Mark had a lot of potential, even though he had given up the sport a few years ago. He was fearless at times and always exciting to watch.

"It is a tragic loss and his family are understandably devastated."
