While breaking no new cinematic ground, Boys Life 5 delivers what fans of the series expect--doe-eyed, full-lipped, underage pretty boys in four short films of varying quality. The least of the lot, Dare. offers the frequently told story of the geeky (but beautiful) gay high school student pining for the popular (and beautiful) jock who just might feel the same about him. This short--set mostly in and around a private swimming pool at night--feels as if it were created specifically to get into a Boys Life collection and nothing more. Late Summer tells a sweet story about a boy in his early teens who, after losing his father, is sent to his aunt and uncles house, where be is befriended by his older cousin. Refreshingly. this potentially cliched setup doesn't go to where lustful minds might expect it would. Fishbelly White--the basis for the critically acclaimed feature film The Mudge Boy--is a heartbreaking tale of a young farm boy who befriends an older teenager. The languid pace at which this story unfolds lets the viewer invest deeply in the characters, which makes the young boy's act of self-preservation in the end both justified and horrifying. Time Off, the first film by Israeli director Eytan Fox (Yossi & Jagger, Walk on Water), represents an enormous production for a short film, with almost 20 speaking parts and dozens of locations in and around Jerusalem. This story of sexual tension between an Israeli soldier and his domineering lieutenant--a scenario that will be familiar to fans of Yossi--is undeniably well-done but at 45 minutes seems a bit drawn-out for its muted payoff.
