Boy, four, fighting for life after accident.

A four-year-old boy was fighting for his life in hospital last night after being knocked down.

The boy was hit by a Land Rover Freelander on Bruce Glazier Terrace in Shotton Colliery, County Durham, at 3.45pm on Saturday.

He sustained serious injuries and was taken Hartlepool General Hospital, but was later transferred to the children's intensive care unit at James Cook Memorial Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he was in a critical condition last night.

Insp Peter Foster, of Durham Police, said: "The Land Rover was travelling south on Bruce Glazier Terrace, having passed over a speed hump and past a caravan parked on its near-side.

"The child has, apparently, run on to the carriageway in front of the Land Rover. The child was knocked down and sustained serious injuries."

The boy's parents were last night at his bedside in hospital.

Anyone who saw the accident is asked to call Durham Police on (0191) 375-2159.
