Boy, 14, had bulletproof vest & knife; COURTS.

A BOY of 14 was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a knife when gardai stopped the car he was driving, a court heard.

The teen, said to be "at grave risk of being shot", was yesterday sentenced to six months detention at the Children's Court, Limerick, for possession of the blade.

Solicitor John Devane said his client had the vest and knife because he was in danger of being shot or killed. He added that drug dealers were using the boy and gave him the items for his safety.

Judge Tom O'Donnell ordered the boy be detained in Trinity House, where he is serving two-and-a-half years for having a stolen shotgun, ammunition and causing criminal damage.
