Boxers advance in world youth meet.

THREE Indian boxers advanced to the second round of the World Youth Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Tuesday.

Sathish Kumar ( 56kg) and Shyam Kakara ( 49kg) won their first round bouts in the men's competition while Nikhat Zareen ( 51kg) progressed in the women's event.

Nikhat thrashed Turkey's Istik Neriman 3- 0 and will now face Korea's Sukyeong Lee, who got a bye in the first round. Nikhat had won a silver medal in the previous edition of the event.

Sathish got the better of Hungary's Nandor Csoka 3- 0. He will meet Cuba's Javier Ibanez next.

Kakara began in impressive style outpunching UAE's Abdulla Almulla as he romped home within the first two rounds via Technical Knock Out ( TKO). Almulla came in for some huge blows from the Indian and could not continue.

Kakara will be up against Sri Lanka's Ishanka Withrana, who got a first- round bye.

Four Indian boxers got a bye in the first round. Asian championships silver- medallists Gaurav Solanki ( 52kg) and Neel Kamal Singh ( 75kg) besides Manjeet ( 69kg) and Manju Bombariya ( 75kg) were handed first- round byes.

The Championship is also a qualifying event for the Youth Olympics, scheduled to be held from August 16 to 28 in Nanjing, China. The boxers will have to reach at least the semi- finals to make the cut for the Youth Olympics.

In the previous edition of the event, India had won a couple of silver medals and a bronze.
